For those of you new to this page, I'm working on a year-long project for 2017 in which I take one (at least) photo everyday for one year. My only rule is that I have to take a picture of SOMETHING. Anything. Most of the time I try to photograph something memorable about that day, so that when I look back at these photos I'll always remember that moment. Doesn't matter if it's good or bad - just real. I'm lucky to say that, so far, almost all of my images represent the good stuff... I'm always looking for it.

Everly is One https://www.janellekiefferphotography.com/blog/2017/4/everly-is-one Over a year ago (obviously, right!) I photographed Alex and Annie to announce they were expecting - and now here they are with their ONE year old baby girl! Miss Everly was as sweet as could be! She laughed at all my jokes, so we hit it off pretty well I'd say. Her mom hit it out of the park with the wardrobes, too. And those balloons!!! This session was a blast... I'm so lucky to call this work.

I would run for Miles https://www.janellekiefferphotography.com/blog/2017/4/i-would-run-for-miles Oh stop me! He's my newest nephew and he's the most precious little thing in the world... his name is Miles. I can't stop making up bad puns in my head. But I also can't stop smiling at these images from his newborn session. I can promise you two things - I'll never tire of photographing him, just like I'll probably never stop with the bad name jokes. Sorry, kid.

Kendall's Baptism https://www.janellekiefferphotography.com/blog/2017/4/kendalls-baptism When Kendall's parents asked me to take some family photos for them on the day of her Baptism I'm sure the idea was "we're all dressed up and we're supposed to take a family photo to remember this special day". Which, they were, and, it was. But it was so much more, too. And I hope now the idea is "I'm glad we had someone to capture this day so we could be there, present in the moment, when our daughter was baptized." It was an honor and a privilege - more than I could ever put into words.

Oona's 3 Month Session https://www.janellekiefferphotography.com/blog/2017/4/oonas-3-month-session What a treat it was to meet little Miss Oona! She's just as sweet as her name. We did an indoor lifestyle session (with a few poses sprinkled in) as one of the perks of signing up for a first year package. Their gallery is a little piece of their lives plucked out of time and kept in photographs. As children grow older it becomes easy to forget the way their room felt, the books they read (over, and over, and oooverrr), the way they curled up on your chest when they were sleepy... I'm always so honored to capture these little memories for my clients. Because I know it goes by so fast. So fast.

April Awaits https://www.janellekiefferphotography.com/blog/2017/4/april-awaits Happy April to you! (and to me!) April is one of my (if not my most) favorite months. I'm looking forward to warmer weather, greener scenery, and all the excitement of real spring! But before springing forward (see what I did there?) let's have a quick look back at March. "Bon Voyage" is the only thing I have to say to March. But it did bring along some fun and funny photographs. A day with two littles is never dull. My goal for April is to get outside to shoot more. I also want to work on using the sun at all times, not just during golden hour. That will be difficult for me, since golden hour is my favorite and I'm comfortable working with the light during that time. But you have to challenge yourself if you want to grow!

March https://www.janellekiefferphotography.com/blog/2017/2/march Fifty-nine! It sounds like such a small number of days to have spent in 2017, when it feels (at least to me) that this year has been going on for MUCH longer! But, we march on (see what I did there?).

I'll be the first to admit I'm guilty of slacking on my project... already. I created these fantastic list of prompts to follow thinking it would help keep my project motivated. I lived, and I learned that life (at least MY life) doesn't lend well to using prompts. On occasion I couldn't think of anything to photograph for a day and would then check the list, but more often than not I did not use any. So I'm editing my rules. I can totally do that, right?

My list for March is much simpler. No more prompts - sorry, I'm so done with those. New goal: TAKE AT LEAST 1 SELFIE. Easy for the average person and phone... not so much for me. I love being behind the camera much more than being in front of it. Time for a role reversal. Time to get in on the action. Wish me luck!

Lastly, it would be a shame not to include a little wrap-up for February by showing my last month in photos. It is so fun to look back, isn't it? What does your month look like?

Halfway Checkup https://www.janellekiefferphotography.com/blog/2017/1/halfway-checkup We're halfway through January already! How you doing on your new goals for the year? Taking your daily photos? Using the daily prompts?

I'll admit that I haven't used the prompts everyday. Most of the time I pick up my camera with the intent to focus on the prompt of the day, and then I notice the kids doing something or remember something significant that "marks the day" and focus on that subject instead. I think the biggest idea when you tackle a Project 365 is to be forgiving of yourself and allow yourself to break a rule (or two, or three). Remember why you started this. No one said this has to be perfect - just make it real.

My kids and I were looking back through the first half of photos from my last Project 365 (boy, am I glad I printed those... wish I could remember to print the rest!) and I realized that one simple photo can hold countless memories and joy. Even for a 5 year old. So keep on shooting, even on those busy, I'd-like-to-forget-this kinda days... you won't regret it.

Questions? Comments? Fire away - I'm an open book!

January Prompts https://www.janellekiefferphotography.com/blog/2016/12/january-prompts

Why not ring in the new year with a project?? I'll be challenging myself this year with (another) Project 365 - a photo a day, for a year. Sometimes it's hard to be creative or find inspiration, and when that happens you can look right here. These are the January 2017 prompts. I'll be doing my best to follow each day, but am also giving myself a little bit of freedom to shoot what I find inspiring, whether it's on my list or not. So -- ready, set, here we go!!

Prep Your 365 https://www.janellekiefferphotography.com/blog/2016/12/prep-your-365 The new year is getting closer and so is the beginning of Project 365! Admittedly, I haven't been preparing as much as I would have liked - but there's no better time to start than right now, right?! I've thought about how I prepared the first time and what I'd add, or change. Here are 5 simple things you can do - or even just think about - to prepare for a Project 365:

1. What are you going to shoot with?

  • What camera do you have on hand to take photos with? Is it a nice little point-and-shoot? A DSLR? Your phone? Is it easy to take with you? Are you committed to bringing it with you? Consider making a space in your bag just for your gear. Plan to shoot at home. Whatever works for you. Don't let this project be a stressful undertaking - it's supposed to be fun, so find a way to make it so.

2. Posting your photos

  • I'll be using Instagram to share my photos. My goal is to share at least one per week. I've created the hashtag #365memories so that if you're sharing we can stay connected. Don't feel like sharing? No problem. You're welcome to follow along without posting anything at all. Totally. up. to you.

3. Printing your photos

  • What are you going to do with all of these photos? Print them? Make an online album? Make a collage? You could print them all one month at a time, every couple months, at the end of the year... again, up. to. you. My last project 365 is in a large collage. This time around? Truthfully I'm still thinking about it. Can you think of any other fun things to do with your photos?

4. What is your goal?

  • Why are you doing this project? What do you want to get out of it? Don't loose sight of your reasons - they'll keep you going on the days you struggle to find motivation. Write it down if you need to. There will be days you don't want to continue. Having a goal in mind will help. And, if you're stubborn like me, simply finishing a project you set out to complete is motivation enough.

5. How can I stick with it?

  • Other than remembering WHY you started in the first place, there a few other helpful tricks or habits that will help you complete your project. First of all, do your best to have fun. Involve your kids or family. If they know what you're doing, they can help. Use them as your inspiration or your subjects. Let your kids tell you what to photograph. Always remember why you're doing this. Lastly, if you need that extra reminder don't think twice about setting the alarm on your phone (that option is a lifesaver, right!?).

I know there are many of you who take photos on a daily basis right now - why not up your game a little bit in 2017? If it means enough to you, you'll make the time for it. And believe me, you'll be very glad you did.

Next post: January 2017 Daily Prompts - - - coming December 28th!
